Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith told the Nine Network from New York on Sunday it’s too early to stop the stimulus spending.

Smith said it is appropriate that the G20 start to contemplate the so-called exit strategy but “we’re a long way from that yet.”

Smith said “We need to have a careful look at how the world exits from this global recession. But this is not the time to stop the stimulus packages.”

However, he said world leaders meeting in the United States this week should examine possible “exit strategies” following the global recession.

“We don’t want the modest and small signs of recovery to stall. If there’s an international downturn, economic growth and jobs and trade are at risk.”

It was particularly important for Australia, as a trading nation, to see the international economy continue to be stimulated, he added.

Leaders from the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe will gather in Pittsburgh in United States for a Group of 20 developed and emerging nations conference this week.
