Iran parliament approves most cabinet nominees

Iran’s parliament on Thursday approved most of the cabinet nominees proposed by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Lawmakers gave votes of confidence to 18 ministers of 21-membercabinet proposed by Ahmadinejad, IRNA said, adding that 3 nominees for the ministers of education, welfare and social security, and energy were rejected.

Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani announced the vote results after four days of debating over the qualification of 21 ministerial nominees.

Marzieh Vahid-Dastjerd, who was approved by the parliament as minister of health, became the country’s first woman minister after 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Two other female nominees for education and welfare ministers were rejected by the parliament.

Ahmad Vahidi who is wanted by Argentina for a 1994 bombing in Buenos Aires was approved by the parliament as defense minister with the highest vote of 227 out of 286 members of parliament present.

Masoud Mir-Kazemi was approved as oil minister and Manouchehr Mottaki was approved as foreign minister for a second term.
