More than 100 people were believed to have been killed after an earthquake triggered a tsunami in the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday, officials said.

A tsunami travel time map and table generated by the United States National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and National Weather Service West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center shows projected travel times for the effects of an earthquake that the center measured as having a preliminary magnitude of 8.3 occurring in the Samoa Islands Region of the Pacific Ocean on Sept. 29, 2009. The quake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale occurred near the islands of Samoa and American Samoa at 6:48 a.m. Wednesday New Zealand time, generating waves of up to five meters high. The quake’s epicenter was 190 km southwest of the islands.

Police in American Samoa on Wednesday told Radio New Zealand that 19 bodies have been recovered so far, and the capital Pago Pago is said to be devastated.

In Tonga, there were reports of 10 deaths on the island of Niuatoputatu, which borders Samoa.

New Zealand’s Acting Prime Minister Bill English told a press conference on Wednesday afternoon that “reliable but unconfirmed” reports said a New Zealander was killed.

A New Zealand Air Force Orion plane was on its way to gauge the damage on Samoa’s southern coast. A Hercules plane is on standby to be loaded with aid equipment but the New Zealand Foreign Minister’s office said more information is being gathered from Samoa about what the needs are.

The Hotel Association in Samoa said most of the resorts and hotels along the south coast of Upolu Island have been wiped out, Radio New Zealand International reported.
