Support rate for Japan’s new cabinet hits 75%: Yumiuri poll

The approval rating for Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama’s newly launched Cabinet reached 75 percent, the second-highest figure after that for former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s cabinet.

In the telephone survey conducted by the paper on Wednesday and Thursday, 17 percent disapproved of the cabinet.

Of the 1,820 eligible voters polled nationwide, 1,087, or 60 percent provided valid answers.

Also on Friday, the Mainichi Shimbun reported a 77 percent support rate for the cabinet and the Asahi Shimbun 78 percent based on their respective surveys.

Hatoyama’s cabinet was formally launched Wednesday shortly after his election to the premiership.

In the historic Aug. 30 lower house election, the DPJ won by a landslide, putting an end to more than 50 years of almost uninterrupted rule by the LDP.
