“I have come here as an innocent man, and I believe I’ll come out of here an innocent man,” local news service Ynet quoted him as saying upon his arrival.

Suspicions against him, all of which date back to his terms as Jerusalem mayor and trade minister before he became prime minister in 2006, include accepting money from a U.S. businessman, double-billing non-profit and state agencies for the same trips abroad and arranging investment opportunities in favor of a former confidant.

“There is no doubt this will be a long and complicated trial,” Navot Tel Tzur, one of Olmert’s lawyers, was quoted as saying, while expressing his confidence that Olmert would be acquitted of all the charges, including fraud, breach of trust and failure to report income.

The 63-year-old former leader was forced to resign last year in the midst of a series of corruption and fraud probes against him. Following rounds of investigation, he was formally indicted late August.
