“On the basis of the constitution, we are compelled to issue a decree on Oct. 25 to hold presidential and parliamentary elections before Jan. 24, and we will issue it,” Abbas told a press conference after meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Islamic Hamas movement said on Tuesday it did not reject Egypt’s proposal for Palestinian unity, but demanded a review of the new articles Cairo added unilaterally.

“We won’t suggest any amendment to what has been reached in Cairo regarding the paper of Palestinian reconciliation,” Yehia Moussa, a Hamas lawmaker, told Xinhua.

Abbas accused Hamas on Tuesday of delaying signing the Egyptian brokered unity deal, but he left the door open for reconciliation.

“The reconciliation is sacred for us. We cannot shut the doors and say we do not want to reconcile,” said Abbas, adding “We want to restore the unity of our people and restore the unity of our land in order to face the occupation and the political process.”

Abbas has accepted the Egyptian proposal which aims at restoring political ties between the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip and the West Bank where the Fatah-dominated Palestinian National Authority (PNA) holds sway.

Egypt has reportedly got fed up with Hamas’ continued delay while Fatah has accepted the Egyptian proposal which calls for holding presidential and parliamentary elections in the Palestinian territories in the middle of next year.
