Smartphone war intensifies in the United States as Verizon Wireless formally unveiled its first handset powered by Google’s Android operating system with new features such as GPS-style navigation.

Motorola co-Chief Executive Sanjay Jha shows off his company’s new Droid phone, a joint venture with Verizon Wireless phone based on Google Inc’s Android 2.0 system, during a media event in New York October 28, 2009. Motorola Inc. unveiled its second phone based on Google Inc’s Android system on Wednesday with U.S. market leader Verizon Wireless, which said it will promote the phone with its biggest marketing campaign ever. Named Droid and made by Motorola, the phone will be available in the United States exclusively at Verizon Wireless stores and online on Nov. 6 at the price of about 200 U.S. dollars with a two-year contract after a 100-dollar rebate.

The Droid is billed as the world’s first smartphone with Android 2.0, latest version of the Google software and also the first device with Google Maps Navigation, a free application which can provide turn-by-turn voice guidance similar to a GPS navigation device.

“This new feature comes with everything you’d expect to find in a GPS navigation system, like 3D views, turn-by-turn voice guidance and automatic rerouting,” Keith Ito, a software engineer at Google, wrote Wednesday in a posting on the company’s blog.

“But unlike most navigation systems, Google Maps Navigation was built from the ground up to take advantage of your phone’s Internet connection,” Ito noted.

According to Verizon Wireless and Motorola, the Droid is one of the world’s thinnest phones with a slide-out computer-like physical keyboard.

The phone also features a 3.7-inch screen, a 5-megapixel camera and DVD-quality video capture and playback function.

“This is an exciting announcement for Verizon Wireless, as the Droid by Motorola is the first device that we are bringing to market under our ground-breaking strategic partnership with Google,” John Stratton, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless, said in a statement.

Verizon Wireless is the latest player joining hands with Google to step up assaults against Apple’s popular iPhone.

In an ad campaign to promote Droid, Verizon Wireless has been touting features such as a real keyboard, the ability to run simultaneous applications and to take night shots that iPhone lacks.

One year after T-Mobile USA began to sell G1, the first phone running Android software, in the United States in October 2008, the Android platform is gaining real momentum with major U.S. carriers rushing for adoption.

T-Mobile USA launched a new myTouch 3G Android phone in the United States in August, followed by Sprint Nextel, the third largest U.S. wireless carrier, which began to sell its first Android phone Hero made by HTC on Oct. 11.

T-Mobile USA is also schedule to sell Cliq, the first Android phone made by Motorola on Nov. 2.

Andy Rubin, senior director for mobile platforms at Google, estimated in May that by the end of this year, there could be up to 20 models on the market worldwide based on the Android platform.
While Android operating system currently runs on less than 2 percent of all smartphones, it is expected to surge to 14 percent of the global smartphone market in 2012, Ken Dulaney, an analyst from market research firm Gartner, said in an interview with Computer world earlier this month.

By then, Android could be the second largest mobile platform globally, behind the Symbian operation system used in Nokia devices, but ahead of iPhone, Windows Mobile and BlackBerry smartphones, Dulaney predicted.
