Apple Inc. on Monday said its fiscal 2009 fourth quarter was the “most profitable” for the company thanks to record Macintosh computer and iPhone sales.

In the quarter ended on Sept. 26, Apple posted net profit of 1.67 billion U.S. dollars and revenue of 9.87 billion dollars, which represented increase of 47 percent and 25 percent respectively compared with the same quarter a year earlier and both beat analysts’ estimates.

The company said it sold 3.05 million Macintosh computers in the quarter, up 17 percent from the year-ago period. Sales of iPhones also rose 7 percent year-on-year to 7.4 million units.

According to Apple, 10.2 million iPod media players were sold during the quarter, a decline of 8 percent from a year earlier.

“We are thrilled to have sold more Macs and iPhones than in any previous quarter,” Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive officer, said in a statement.

“We’ve got a very strong lineup for the holiday season and some really great new products in the pipeline for 2010,” he added.

For the whole fiscal year of 2009, Apple’s revenue grew by 12 percent and net income increased by 18 percent despite the “extraordinarily challenging times,” noted Peter Oppenheimer, the company’s chief financial officer.
