“The government vehemently condemns the statement and wishes to declare that it is an irresponsible statement made deliberately to tarnish the image of Sri Lanka and also it appears to be a part of a vicious political agenda,” Defence spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella told reporters.

Rambukwella said no incident of rape had been reported in the three and half years of humanitarian mission successfully conducted by the Sri Lankan Security Forces.

He said the government will take up this matter with relevant international authorities.

It is reported that Hillary Clinton targeted Sri Lanka at a UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday, where the council unanimously adopted a resolution creating new tools to combat sexual violence against women and children in conflict situations.

The U.S. secretary of state said that rape had been used as a weapon of war in the Balkans, Burma, Sri Lanka and elsewhere and that in too many countries and in too many cases, the perpetrators had not been punished.

The government troops defeated the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in a military campaign from 2006 to 2009, ending the 30-year-old campaign to carve out an independent Tamil homeland in the north and east.

About 250,000 civilians displaced by the final battles between the two sides are being housed in several government-run welfare villages in the north, waiting to be resettled to their original places.
