Blast hits Pakistan’s garrison city, 34 killed

At least 34 people have been killed and 32 others wounded in an alleged suicide explosion in Rawalpindi cantonment area near the Pakistani capital of Islamabad on Monday, police and rescue sources said.

City Police Chief Rao Muhammad Iqbal told reporters at the attack site that the blast occurred in the parking of a hotel, located near the Pakistan’s army headquarters.

Several shopping centers, hotels and banks are located in the area, witnesses said.

No group claimed responsibility for the blast but the government blames militants for such attacks.

The bomb detonated when the people busy morning shopping and a large number of people were present in a bank to draw salaries, a witness said.

According to reports, the blast occurred at 10:40 am local time (0740 GMT), outside the door of an outlet of the National Bank of Pakistan near the Shalimar Hotel, also damaged many buildings and vehicles nearby.

Sources said there was long queue of persons outside the bank who were gathered to collect the salaries and pension when an alleged suicide bomber blew up himself.

The police chief said that preliminary investigation suggests that the bomb detonated in the parking of Hotel Shalimar.

District Coordination Officer Imdadullah Bosal said that the blast seems to be a suicide attack.

Police Officer Aslam Tarin said suicide bomber was riding on a motorbike. Some body parts of bomber and a suicide jacket have been recovered from the blast site. A head is also found from the scene.

Troops from the nearby army’s General Headquarters and police cordoned off the main road and also barred TV cameramen and journalists to the blast site, as rescue operation is underway.

Thirteen bodies were shifted to DHQ hospital and 16 in different hospitals whereas three bodies transferred to military hospital, rescue sources said. Emergency has been imposed in the hospitals.

According to media sources, all the schools across Rawalpindi have been closed after the blast on Monday and school children are being escorted by security officials to home.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani condemned the blast and said such attacks will not deter the government from campaign against the militants.
