He has passed 78 cycles of summer and autumn, he has faced dauntless challenges since his childhood, yet he is not exhausted and wishes more.

Min Bahadur Sherchan speaks at a program in Kathmandu, capital of Nepal, Nov. 23, 2009. Min Bahadur Sherchan has officially replaced Japanese climber Yuichiro Miura in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest man to climb Mt Qomolangma (also Mt Everest), a press meet said on Monday. The certificate handed to Sherchan by the Guinness World Records says, “The oldest man to climb Mt Everest is Min Bahadur Sherchan (Nepal b.20 June 1931) who reached the summit on 25 May 2008 at the age of 76 years 340 days.” (Xinhua/Bimal Gautam)

The 78 years old Nepali citizen Min Bahadur Serchan, an oldest hero to summit Mt. Qomolangma is determined to conquer the peak once again breaking his own record before he turns 84 years of his age.

Serchan successfully ascended the top of the world on May 25, 2008 at the age of 76 years and 340 days from South Col Route beating the previous world records set by Japan’s 71 years 2 months and 2 days old Katsusuke Yanagisawa who climbed Mt. Qomolangma on May 22, 2007.

“I’m not fully satisfied with this success, there are some incompleteness I feel inside, I want to summit top of the world once again until I get 84,” said Sherchan talking to Xinhua on Tuesday.

Senior Nepali citizen Serchan, who is the president of Mt. Everest Expedition, Nepal: 2008 (SECEE Nepal: 2008) was guided by world’s fastest mountaineer to scale Mt. Qomolangma with the record of eight hours 10 minutes on May 21, 2004.

There were altogether six people in Sherchan’s expedition to conquer Mt. Qomolangma, said Nanda Bahadur Singh, General Secretary and Spokesperson of SECEE Nepal: 2008.

“Nepal possesses so many titles in the ’Guinness World Records (GWR)’ for conquering Mt. Qomolangma such as first person to climbMt. Qomolangma, fastest climber, the youngest climber, the most summits among others. Why not the oldest one?,” he asked.

“Before me, the oldest man to climb Mt. Qomolanga was Japanese, so I decided to hold this title in Nepal and began my expedition,” Sherchan added.

“Not just for the sake of my nation and myself, but for the sake of whole world with the slogan “World Peace for Humanity” I began this expedition and finally succeeded,” he further said talking to Xinhua.

According to him, he did not get any special training for mountaineering neither he was accustomed to mountain climbing. Nevertheless, he had climbed the Mt. Naya-Khanga Peak (5,844 meters) on Sep. 11, 2006.

Bold and daring Serchan hailing from Myadgdi district in western Nepal has a series of good records of adventurous journeys as well as mountain climbing.

He had successfully fulfilled his responsibility as the liaison officer appointed by Nepali government for the Swiss Expedition team under the name of the “Ascent of the Dhaulagiri, 1960″, according to SECEE. Despite his retired age, he said, he is in sound health. “I had no problem while climbing Mt. Qomolangma neither there will be any problem ahead due to my age if I set to climb it again before 84,” he said.

Following his success of registering his name in GWR, Sherchan wishes to devote his entire life in social welfare service — to set up two separate shelters for old-age people and other for orphan or street children, to set up a cosmopolitan intellectual shelter for the study and research in Nepal and to launch a campaign to protect “Earth-Mother” both from nuclear arm race and global warming.

Meanwhile, he was felicitated for his successful expedition by Nepali Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal amid a formal program organized in capital Kathmandu on Monday which was organized by SECEE Nepal: 2008.
