A/H1N1 flu was widespread in only 14 U.S. states last week, down from 25 in the previous week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Friday.

“Fourteen states reported geographically widespread influenza activity, Puerto Rico and 25 states reported regional influenza activity, the District of Columbia and seven states reported local influenza activity, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam and four states reported sporadic influenza activity,” the CDC said on its web site.

In late October, 48 U.S. states were reporting widespread cases of A/H1N1 flu activity. But since then, there has been a decline across the country.

Meanwhile, “Visits to doctors for influenza-like illness (ILI) nationally decreased again this week over last week,” the CDC said in its latest report, adding that it is the sixth consecutive week of national decreases in ILI after four consecutive weeks of sharp increases.

While ILI has declined, the CDC pointed out that visits to doctors for influenza-like illness remain higher than average figures at this time of the year.

“Nationwide during week 48 (ending on Oct. 5), 2.7 percent of patient visits reported through the U.S. Outpatient Influenza-likeIllness Surveillance Network (ILINet) were due to influenza-like illness (ILI),” the CDC said, adding that this percentage is still above the national baseline of 2.3 percent.

Despite the subsided rate of A/H1N1 flu infections in recent weeks, Thomas R. Frieden, the CDC director, told a press conference Thursday that it was impossible to predict what the winter and spring might bring.

About half of the experts interviewed by the CDC think there would be many more cases, while the other half was taking the opposite view, he said, explaining that “the truth is we don’t know.”

“Only time will tell what the future will hold — but the more people who get vaccinated, the lower the probability of a third wave of the pandemic,” Dr. Frieden said.

“That’s why vaccination remains the most important thing you can do to protect yourself and your family from H1N1 influenza,” he explained.
