The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the storm has brought howling winds and freezing temperatures, and dumping more than 30.5 cm of snow in 12 states.

The administration said the storm have moved through 46 of the 50 U.S. states so far this week.

Nearly 50 cm of snow fell in Wisconsin, and 40 cm in Iowa.

Nebraska received 26 cm of the snow, the most snow that state has seen in December in 50 years.

Most of the 17 storm deaths were due to traffic accidents caused by hazardous road conditions.

In Kansas visibility was a mere 15 meters, and a major highway in Iowa was shut down, leaving truck drivers stranded.

In New England, the snow turned to rain and flooded some areas, causing freezing temperatures.

In the mid-South there were high winds and widespread flooding.

In Nashville, Tenn., the wind was enough to snap the Christmas tree at the state Capitol building in half.

As of Thursday, the storm is moving north into Canada, but another is brewing, according to weather forecasters.
