“We know that 12 individuals have been injured. Five individuals are known to have lost their lives,” Mayor Sebastian Giuliano told a news conference.

He, however, said the exact number of casualties is not yet available as it is not known how many workers were at the site when the explosion occurred at the Kleen Energy Plant at about 11: 30 local time.

Earlier, Al Santostefano, the deputy fire marshal in Middletown, told local media Hartford Courant that at least 50 construction workers were on the site when the explosion occurred.

“Multiple contractors were on site - adding to the confusion on the number of employees actually working on site,” the mayor’s office said earlier in a statement.

The power plant is not yet fully on line and the explosion occurred during a testing procedure, the statement said.

Gas explosion was assumed to be the main cause of the incident that blew apart the power plant and the possibility of terrorist attack has been ruled out, the statement said.

Currently the search and rescue team is on site with dogs in an attempt to locate other victims, it said.

As many as 20 ambulances rushed to the site, and helicopters were airlifting victims to nearby hospitals.

Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell was due to visit Middletown and had activated the state’s emergency operations center in Hartford, about 30 kilometers to the north of Middletown, her office said.

People who live around 20 miles away reported having felt the explosion which many mistook for an earthquake.
