Russia has not ruled out the same group may be behind the bomb attacks in Dagestan Wednesday and Moscow two days ago, according to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

“I don’t rule out that this is one and the same gang,’’ Putin was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying at a Cabinet meeting Wednesday.

“No matter in which part of the country these crimes have been committed, nor who have fallen victim to these crimes, we see this as a crime against Russia,” the prime minister said.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev also said the blasts in Dagestan and on the Moscow metro system were linked to the same chain, according to Interfax news agency.

“Terrorists will not be allowed to achieve their goal of destabilizing Russia,” the RIA Novosti quoted Medvedev as saying.

Putin has previously vowed to “drag out of the sewer’’ the terrorists who carried out the Moscow attacks, which killed 39 and injured more than 60. Twelve people, including nine police officers, were killed in two blasts on Wednesday in the town of Kizlyar in Russia’s volatile North Caucasus region of Dagestan.

Investigation official Nizami Radzhaboiv said bomb experts estimated the power of the first explosive device in Kizlyar was equivalent to up to 200 kg of TNT.

“The explosives were stuffed in a Niva car driven by a suicide bomber,” Radzhabov said.

Putin has ordered the regional Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev to reinforce police forces in the North Caucasus.

“Police units in the North Caucasus republics, including Dagestan, must be strengthened,” he said.

Dagestan President Magomedsalam Magomedov also said in an urgent meeting after the Kizlyar bombings that they may be linked to the Moscow bombings, which were carried out by two female suicide bombers.

“A chance has been given to the terrorists to return to peaceful life, but they don’t want it,” the president said. “We shall track them down and eliminate them.”
