From now on exercise enthusiasts have another choice to practice in a funky, rhythmic and charming way to Latin music with Zumba, a combination of dancing and fitness which has come to Vietnam for the first time.

Zumba is a slang term for the buzzing sound of a bee or for moving fast that was coined by an aerobics trainer named Beto Perez in 1986. One day Perez forgot his aerobic music tapes so he took his own music from his car, including salsa and meringue, and improvised for his class. Since then, learners in Perez’s classes didn’t want to practice aerobics but the new dance-fitness called Zumba which has touched millions of people around the world.

World famous dance master Mike Thomas instructs people in Zumba dance-fitness at the California Fitness & Yoga Center in HCMC’s District 5 on Tuesday.

In fact, Zumba is a dance workout suitable for everyone to lose weight, keep in shape, release tension or just have fun with some simple moves and steps. Each session of Zumba lasts an hour surrounded by four Latin rhythms of salsa, meringue, cumbia and reggaeton together. Flamenco, rumba, calypso and mambo tunes are also used for the workout.

With Zumba, learners don’t have to struggle to memorize all the steps nor need a dance partner because it teaches people how to enjoy their workout and burn calories in a fun and simple way.

Older people and those who have problems with their hearts or high blood pressure can also enjoy this dance-fitness by making moves slower or just shaking to the music beat. Those steps and moves help people to improve their health and mind.

This month, the California Fitness & Yoga Centers (CFYC) have brought Zumba to Vietnam with the instruction of Mike Thomas, a world famous dance master, as well as the Zumba Training Specialist for the Asia Pacific region to all trainers at CFYC Hung Vuong club in HCMC’s District 5.
