VietNamNet Bridge – Construction work at a bear rescue centre, which will care for scores of animals, has started on Hon Me Island, in Tho Son Commune, Hon Dat District, southern Kien Giang Province.

The centre is the first of its kind in the Mekong Delta.

According to the Kien Giang Union of Friendship Organisations, the 500,000 USD centre has been financed by the Vietnam-based NGO ‘Wildlife At Risk’ (WAR) and ‘Free the Bears’ (FTB).

By early 2009, the centre will begin to feed the first bears and when the first phase of the project is completed, it will be able to accommodate 100 animals.
The centre is expected to become a major tourist attraction for the region.
