VietNamNet Bridge – On October 9, 5giay.vn, a website run by iGO Media Digital Company, issued a press release announcing that the website had suffered a DDOS (distributed denial of service) attack.

Prior to that, information about DDOS attacks started appearing on informatics forums on October 5. Entries on the forums said that IT experts thought there was a big-scale attack occurring with the involvement of 3-5,000 botnets. www.bkav.com.vn owned by Bach Khoa Internet Security Centre (BKIS) was believed to be one of the victims.

The press release said that light DDOS attacks occur regularly with 5giay.vn. However, the DDOS attack on October 7 was the biggest the company had seen to date, coming from thousands of computers. As the attack occurred while the website was systematically upgrading, it caused the interruption of the website assessment.

5giay.vn believes that one of the reasons that the website has become a target for hackers is that it is a very bustling online trade website, and thus draws the attention of blackhat hackers.

Moreover, it is possible that some old members of 5giay.vn who once violated regulations of the website and were fired have returned to attack the website.

5giay.vn also thinks there is a possibility that a competitor is involved.

According to 5giay.vn, preventing DDOS attacks proves to be a very difficult job which requires very advanced knowledge of technology. Even the websites of big companies and government networks, like NASA’s network in the US, have been victims of such attacks.

5giay.vn is trying to collect evidence, while actively joining forces with the Ministry of Public Security and internet security centres to track down the culprits of the DDOS attack.
