VietNamNet BridgeThe Prime Minister has required relevant agencies to take action immediately to implement punitive measures on the Taiwanese-owned company Vedan for its violating of the environmental protection law.

Vedan will have to pay out 267.5 million VND in fines due to a series of violations of rules which resulted in pollution of the environment.

PM Nguyen Tan Dung assigned the Vietnam Environmental Protection Fund to receive and use the environmental protection fees, fines and compensation paid by Vedan and other companies that have discharged waste products into the Thi Vai river. The money will be spent on projects to treat pollution on the river.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, People’s Committees of cities and provinces in the Dong Nai river basin were requested to build and implement projects to treat pollution in the Dong Nai river basin, including the Thi Vai river.

The Government’s leader also ordered relevant ministries and agencies to review and make proposals on amendments and supplementations to environmental protection regulations in order to strengthen State management of environmental protection.

Leaders of ministries, sectors and localities must act to accelerate the implementation of environmental law, strictly deal with all violations and invest more in human resources and infrastructure to serve the inspection and execution of the law.

Earlier the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment requested southern Dong Nai Province to temporarily suspend Vedan’s operations until it complies with waste treatment procedures following Vietnamese environmental standards.

Vedan will have to pay out 267.5 million VND in fines due to a series of violations of rules which resulted in pollution of the environment.
The ministry also requested Vedan to pay due environmental protection fees totaling almost 127.27 billion VND.

The company was asked to remove all pipelines and sewerage treatment systems within one month, as well as to cease the discharge of waste products.

Vedan commenced operations in Vietnam in 1991, specialising in the production of MSG, acid powder, sugared water, Sodium Hydroxide, and other bio-products. Its system of plants covers 120 ha in the southern province of Dong Nai.
