Student hacker to receive administrative punishment
Published: 15/10/2008 05:00
VietNamNet Bridge – The secondary school student from Quang Nam Province who launched the recent denial-of-service attack (DdoS) on three major websites in Vietnam will face administrative punishment, and no criminal charges. The website of BKIS: www.bkav.com.vn was attacked first on the morning of October 5, with later attacks in the evening hitting www.5giay.vn (a leading shopping forum) and www.nhatnghe.com (website of Nhat Nghe IT Training Center ). The attacks were blocked the next morning and temporarily released some stress for the webmasters of three three websites. However, another attack was carried out two days later and lasted for two days, Oct 7-8. All connections to the three websites failed and received the feedback “Server Error in ‘/’ Application”. The perpetrator declared that he had many friends transfer viruses to computers at some local Internet shops. Later, when the next customers connected their external flash drives to the computers which were infected with virus, they also received the virus in their flash drives. This infection spread from the initial computer to many other computers via external flash drives and even some internet sharing services, including emails and instant messengers. The result was that 1,000 computers ended being attacked and controlled by the young hacker. The owners of these computers did not recognize that their computers had already become botnets. Later, the perpetrator used these botnets to launch DdoS attacks on other websites. The student was caught after it was found that his computer contained all the history cookies for the attacks. However, considering the danger level of the case and the purpose of the attack, a C15 official said: “The young hacker did not recognize that his attack was against the law. Moreover, this is the first time that he has made this mistake. So the police will not lauch criminal proceedings against him.” The police have asked the student and his family to sign a statement admitting his illegal action and another undertaking that he will refrain from such actions in the future.
