Government vows to boost IT development

| VietNamNet Bridge - The IT and telecommunication industry would continue to enjoy the right conditions to make it a spearhead of the national economy, a seminar on the Vietnam’s IT sector heard on Nov. 28.
Speaking at the seminar, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan said it was necessary to review policies relevant to the IT sector to aid development. “We should focus on how to attract more qualified personnel and more investment to this emerging sector,” he said. Nhan said Vietnam ’s IT sector had moved from being little known in the world to staking a place for itself on the global map. According to the Information and Communication Minster Le Doan Hop, Vietnam is currently ranked 20 th in the list of world’s most attractive countries for outsourcing and IT services. The country has attracted 332 foreign-invested projects worth 2 billion USD in IT since 1995, of which last year’s alone accounted for 32 percent. Hop said as well as favourable policies, the expansion of industrial zones and software zones was one reason behind the fast development of the IT sector in Vietnam . The country now has 186 industry zones and five software zones covering areas of 45,000ha and 737,000s.q.m, respectively. According to the Ministry of Information and communication, in 2007, Vietnam spent an average 36.2 USD mobile phones, home electronics, and IT products. Hanoians led the spending paying 186 USD for IT products a year, followed by citizens in HCM City with 148 USD and Da Nang people with 117 USD.
