Hanoi University professor wins Int’l Cosmos Prize

VietNamNet Bridge – Honourable Professor Phan Nguyen Hong from the Hanoi National University became the first Vietnamese recipient of the International Cosmos Prize after beating 131 other candidates from 25 countries.

The awards ceremony for the 2008 Prize winner took place in the Japanese city of Osaka on November 4, where Prof. Hong was presented with over 40 million JPY (roughly 400,000 USD) in prize money, in addition to a certificate and a medal.

At the event, Japanese Herbalife Family Foundation Chairperson Takashi Imai praised Prof Hong’s research in taxonomy and the bio-ecology of tropical wet-lands.

“Tireless efforts made by Prof. Phan Nguyen Hong over the past 40 years have made considerable contributions to conserving and protecting marsh forests. His research projects were of primary importance in preserving bio-diversity and curbing global warming,” said Imai.

The Japanese Prime Minister, Taro Aso, sent congratulations to Prof. Hong, saying that his research has contributed to the harmony between human beings and nature.

Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Phu Binh emphasised that the award honoured not only Prof. Hong, but also the entire national scientific circle.

In an interview with Vietnam News Agency, Prof Hong said his achievements received a lot of assistance from colleagues and help from the State, international organizations, scientists from both Vietnam and abroad, and particularly coastal residents.

He said he would continue with projects studying coastal forest conservation, so as to contribute to marine resource protection and poverty reduction.

“I will donate part of my prize money to supporting scientific research among the university’s teaching staff and students,” promised the 73-year old professor.

Professor Hong is an internationally-renowned expert on Asian wetland ecology systems.
