VietNamNet Bridge – To attract overseas Vietnamese scientists to state agencies, the HCM City People’s Committee has asked the local Party Committee for permission to pay these subjects high salaries.

HCM City Vice Chairman Nguyen Thanh Tai suggested applying special policies for the HCM City Institute for Calculation Sciences and Technology. This is a new institute in Vietnam, and only foreign or overseas Vietnamese scientists are able to fill key positions at the institute at present.

The local authorities, therefore, have proposed a special incentive policy for overseas Vietnamese scientists working at the institute. The suggested monthly salary for the institute’s director is VND17 million ($1,000); VND15 million ($890) for the deputy director; and VND12 million ($700) for the chiefs of research departments. The total pay for one director, one deputy director and five department chiefs would be VND1.104 billion per year ($65,000).

The HCM City People’s Committee previously proposed applying this special policy to the Deputy Director of the HCM City Biotechnology Centre, who is also an overseas Vietnamese, recommending the salary of VND15 million ($890) per month.
