VietNamNet Bridge – To attract overseas Vietnamese scientists to state agencies, the HCM City People’s Committee asked the local Party Committee’s permission to pay a high salary to this subject.

HCM City’s Vice Chairman Nguyen Thanh Tai suggested applying special policies for the HCM City Institute for Calculation Sciences and Technology. This is a new science in Vietnam, only which foreign or overseas Vietnamese scientists can assume key positions at the institute.

The local authorities, therefore, proposed to have a special incentive policy for overseas Vietnamese scientists working at the institute. The monthly salary for the institute’s director is suggested at VND 17 million (US $1,000), VND 15 million (US $890) for the deputy director, and VND 12 million (US $700) for the chief of research departments. The total pay for one director, one deputy director and five department chiefs is just over VND 1.1 billion per year (US $65,000).

The HCM City People’s Committee previously proposed to use this special policy for the Deputy Director of the HCM City Biotechnology Centre, who is also an overseas Vietnamese, with VND 15 million (US $890) per month.
