VietNamNet Bridge – Le Anh Minh Khue, a tenth-month old baby from the southern province of Dong Nai, will have a liver transplant operation Monday at the HCM City-based Children’s Hospital 2.

Doctor Tran Dong A, who has been involved in five liver transplant surgeries, said this is the youngest liver-transplant patient in Vietnam so far.

Liver donor is Le Thi Van Anh, 32, the baby’s mother. Belgian experts and experienced Vietnamese doctors from other hospitals in HCM City will perform the surgery. They will take 270g of the liver from the mother to transplant to the child.

Doctor Dong A said doctors will face a lot of difficulties because the patient is a little baby and some organs in her bodies have failed. But he confirmed that the baby would not survive without the operation.

The doctor said annually, two children’s hospitals in HCM City discover around 50 children who suffer from innate gall atrophy, like the case of Minh Khue. Around one fifth of the patients can be cured by the Kasai method and the remaining need liver transplants.

In the past two years, the Children’s Hospital 2 conducted five liver transplant operations and all of them were successful.
