Making greener cement from waste products

VietNamNet Bridge – A seminar on the treatment of garbage and the use of alternative fuels in cement production was held in Hanoi on Nov. 7 by the Vietnam Cement Corporation (Vicem) and F.L. Smith Group of Denmark.
Vicem’s Deputy General Director Vu Van Hiep said that in the recent past, national cement production has increased steadily. A series of cement plants are to be built, increasing the total output capacity of Vietnam ’s cement plants to 70 million tonnes per year by 2010, and 88.5 million tonnes per year by 2015. According to Hiep, the cement industry has invested in refurbishment to increase the capacity of the cement plants and to save energy. However, the prices of both petrol and coal have increased, leading cement businesses to consider the use of alternative fuels in order to reduce production costs, he said. Holcim-Vietnam cement company uses alternative fuels to power approximately 14 percent of its production. The alternative fuels are produced mainly from combustible waste and by-products from the plastics, oil and footwear industries. F.L. Smidth Group experts presented methods to make use of alternative fuel sources in cement production. They noted that using alternative fuels from waste products in cement production in a proper manner will cut down on the use of natural energy, protect the environment and minimise production costs. Experts predicted that, in the future, cement plants will play a huge role in waste treatment. (Source: VNA) |
