This will be the second opportunity for the unlucky boy after doctors at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, refused to conduct surgery, saying it was too risky.

Son was brought to Ottawa in July 2007 by Canadian Kate Maslen, programme manager of the Ottawa-based Children’s Bridge Foundation. He has been living in Halifax with foundation President Olwyn Walter.

Walter said following the Toronto hospital’s refusal, she received a letter from Dr. Milton Waner, co-director of the New York-based Vascular and Birthmarks Institute, showing his intention to help the Vietnamese boy.

According to Waner, Son’s disease may threaten his life when he grows up, which is contrary to the Toronto hospital’s conclusion that the growth seemed to be non-life-threatening.

Apart from Dr. Waner, the US’s Boston Hospital agreed to provide medical tests for the Vietnamese orphan.

Son was abandoned by his parents at the age of three because of a facial hemangioma, a benign tumour of blood vessels. He lived in an orphanage in northern Hai Duong Province, where he met Kate Maslen.
