VietNamNet BridgeThe Fred Hollows Fund (FHF) of Australia has announced a 2.5 million USD aid to a community-based eye care programme, second phase, to be implemented from 2009-2012 in central, Central Highlands and southern provinces.

The project will benefit some 16,000 blind people in three central provinces of Phu Yen, Quang Tri and Binh Dinh, the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak and Vinh Long Province in the south, said FHF country representative Huynh Tan Phuc.

Phuc added the money would be used to conduct surgeries for patients suffering from such eye problems as cataracts, crossed-eyes, hooded eyes, trachoma, and glocom.

The aid will also cover the construction of local eye hospitals, training of ophthalmologists, information campaigns to raise public awareness on health care and ophthalmologic research.

“The aid comes after the success of the programme’s first phase in Quang Tri, Binh Dinh and Phu Yen over the past three years at a cost of over 1.5 million USD,” Phuc said.

The Central Institute of Ophthalmology reported that in 2008, international organisations donated some 2.5 million USD for eye care programmes, especially those targeting the poor and children.
FHF is a non-Governmental organisation named after the late Australian ophthalmologist Fred Hollows.
