VietNamNet BridgeThe Hanoi Eye Hospital, with assistance of China ’s Mega Group, has conducted cataract surgery for more than 20,000 patients over the last 10 years.

In 1998, Mega experts transferred the Phaco technique, the latest in cataract surgery at the time, to the Hanoi Eye Hospital.

A meeting to mark 10 years of cooperation between the hospital and the Chinese group was held in Hanoi on Nov. 29.

On the occasion, the Minister of Health honoured Mega group’s General Director L.P Anderson and director of the Mega Eye Centre Cung Li Li with the “For the People’s Health.”

In 1998, Mega experts transferred the Phaco technique, the latest in cataract surgery at the time, to the Hanoi Eye Hospital.

In phaco method, an ultra sound or laser probe is used to break the lens apart without harming the capsule. These fragments are then aspirated out of the eye. A foldable intraocular lens is then introduced through the 3m incision. Once inside the eye, the lens unfolds to take position inside the capsule. No sutures are needed, as the incision is self-healing.

The technique is now applied at many local hospitals, including Dong Da, Saint Paul and Bac Thang Long.
