VietNamNet Bridge – A two-week baby girl in the southern province of Soc Trang has had a successful operation to cut off two legs that were growing out of her back.

When she was born on October 26, the baby had a tumor on her back. Two legs with two toes each grew from the tumor. The baby was transferred to the HCM City-based Children’s Hospital on November 7.

Scans showed that the tumor and two legs were stuck to her spinal column, not to the bone. Her spinal column opened at the belt spinal column, causing marrow herna.

The operation to cut off the redundant legs took place on November 21 by French and Vietnamese doctors. The baby is now in good health and will leave the hospital next week.

According to experts, this may be the first case in the world when a baby was born with four legs. This is not a case of Siamese twins, as the baby has only one spinal column. This malformation is called pygomelia.
