The VND12 billion (US$710,000) project, the first of its kind in Viet Nam, aims to perfect the Sigma K3 microprocessor, renamed SG-8V1, for mass commercial production.

The two-year project, carried out by the University’s Integrated Circuit Research and Education Centre (ICDREC), will churn out 150,000 SG-8V1 chips and other support tools for research and development of the SG-8V1 microprocessor.

Ngo Duc Hoang, director of the university centre, said the SG-8V1 microprocessor was priced 30 per cent lower than similar chips manufactured in other countries.

Hoang said the homemade chip targeted industrial goals, such as use for electronic products, defence and exploration purposes, and research and education.

He added an investment of VND9.5 billion for the SG-8V1 microprocessor project would be funded by the HCM City budgets.

ICDREC, the first IC design centre in Viet Nam, specialises in training human resources for the IC design industry.

It engages in research and development activities in IC technology and application of IT technology, conducting experimental production, providing services on IC design and other services such as IP core sales and licensing, technology transfer, consulting and outsourcing. The centre opened in January this year.
