VietNamNet Bridge – The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) on December 3 presented its Dharmawansa Senadhira Award to Vietnamese Professor, Doctor Bui Chi Buu, to recognize his outstanding contribution to rice variety research in Los Banos, Philippines.

In the past two decades, Dr. Buu, Director of the Southern Institute for Agricultural Sciences, has researched and created many rice varieties which are adaptable to salty soil and highly resistant to pesticides, contributing to rice production in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam’s rice granary.

Dr. Buu is the first Vietnamese and the third scientist in the world who has been granted this award.

In 2004, the Dharmawansa Senadhira Award was presented to an Indian scientist. In 2006, it belonged to a Bangladeshi scientist and this year it went to a Vietnamese scientist.
