VietNamNet Bridge – The City People’s Committee has ordered low-lying districts to take extra measures to prevent dyke breaches and flooding from now until the end of February to ensure a peaceful Tet Lunar New Year Festival for the people.

The City People’s Committee has ordered low-lying districts to take extra measures to prevent dyke breaches and flooding from now until the end of February.

The order followed a warning by the Southern Hydro-Meteorology Forecasting Centre that the city could be hit by three floodtides during the period.

The centre has said the tides will be caused by a cold front that moves to the south from the north, triggering strong northeast winds and unseasonal rain. The abnormal weather phenomenon could see water levels in the Sai Gon and Dong Nai rivers rise to the record level of 1.54 m, causing flooding of some city areas during the festival days.

The city has urged authorities in outlying districts of Thu Duc, Binh Chanh, Cu Chi and Hoc Mon to promptly complete ongoing reinforcement work on dyke systems to fight the tides and prevent flooding.

Inspection teams from these districts have been asked to regularly monitor vital sections of dykes and river embankments and effect timely repairs. Local administrations have also been urged to help local households repair and strengthen weak dyke sections.

Relevant city agencies will co-operate with district authorities to inspect irrigation works, water drainage systems, sluices, pumping stations and power supply systems to ensure timely responses to the high tides and help residents enjoy a peaceful Tet.

The mass media, especially radio stations, have been told to promptly broadcast updated news on weather formation to help people prepare and deal effectively with natural disasters.

In mid January, a major dyke breach had caused massive flooding in Hiep Binh Phuoc Ward, Thu Duc District. The breach was measured at 15 metres as a result of strong tides. The flooding, which was as high as 1.3 metres in some local streets, affected 200 households.
