VietNamNet BridgeThe sustainable development of the nation’s water resources was the major topic at a meeting of the International Support Group for Natural Resources and the Environment (ISGE), which took place in Hanoi on Jan 15 to announce its work schedule for 2009.

A degradation in the quality of water, increased impacts of natural disasters and the effects of climate change on water resources are among the biggest environmental challenges to Vietnam.

The meeting was chaired by Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Pham Khoi Nguyen and attracted the participation of representatives from numerous relevant agencies, institutes, international organisations and Hanoi-based foreign embassies.

The participants stressed the need for a dialogue on policies governing the development of water resources, which they said are not currently sustainable as just 44 percent of surface water is locally-sourced.

A degradation in the quality of water, increased impacts of natural disasters and the effects of climate change on water resources are among the biggest environmental challenges to Vietnam, they said.

Meanwhile, the models traditionally used to manage water resources in Vietnam are no longer effective in dealing with the current issues, they stressed.

ISGE has set seven targets for 2009, including enhancing dialogue regarding environmental policies, incorporating these into national and local plans and programmes, and engaging NGOs, communities and the private sector in implementing environmental programmes.
