The People’s Committee of the central city of Da Nang, Institute for Social and Environmental Transition (ISET), and the Challenge to Change (CtC) signed the project on coping with natural calamities in Da Nang at a conference held yesterday in the city.

According to CtC representative in Vietnam, the project aims at piloting, assessing and taking specific actions to foster climate change resilience in urban areas; establishing the database of experience, failures and successes in coping with climate change; assisting the city outline a process of nurturing climate change resilience; and increasing the city’s capacity in this field.

The project on coping with natural calamities in Da Nang is a component of the “Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network” (ACCCRN) financed with US $50 million by the US Rockefeller Foundation. The ACCCRN is carried out for five years to help some cities in Vietnam, India, Thailand, and Indonesia cope with natural disasters in the coming decades.

In Vietnam, ACCCRN is conducted in Da Nang, Quy Nhơn and Can Tho.

The conference “Da Nang and Climate Change”, organized on Friday, focused on impacts caused by climate change in Central Vietnam; natural calamities in Da Nang; urban development in risky areas; the community’s vulnerability; and experience of confronting natural disasters.

Dr. Stephen Tyler, senior expert from ISET, the conference was a forum for scientists and local leaders to exchange opinions and scientific knowledge in predicting climate change in Central Vietnam in the future.
