In the last two years, flood tides in HCM City have risen quite high. In December 2008, the flood tide reached 1.55m, the highest in the past 50 years. HCM City authorities worry that this is the result of global climate change.

Flood in HCM City.

In a recent meeting about flood prevention in HCM City, the city’s Chairman Le Hoang Quan stated: “Climate change has been influencing weather. Impacts caused by climate change have affected social and economic life in many regions”.

Recent research works by Vietnamese and international environment agencies say that Vietnam is one of the four countries that will suffer the most serious impacts from global climate change. According to Quan, the 1.55m flood high in HCM City is clear evidence of this.

The chairman told local agencies to conduct research about the impacts of climate change on HCM City to serve the task of preventing floods in the city.

The chairman also agreed upon an irrigation project to prevent flood tides worth VND11.531 trillion ($678.29 million).
