The biggest problem for candidates of this program is English.

VietNamNet Bridge – The Mekong 1000 programme aims to train 1,000 doctors for the Mekong Delta by 2010. However, the programme will be extended till 2015.

The Vice Chief of the Mekong 100 programme, Le Viet Dung, said it is highly possible that this programme will run till 2015. Can Tho, the largest city in the Mekong Delta, announced it would try to complete the programme in 2011.

After four years of implementing the program, Can Tho had 8 master’s degree holders in 2008 and will have an additional 42 in 2009, all of whom were trained abroad.

The above programme targets, with $50 million in funding, to train 1,000 sci-tech experts with master’s and doctoral degrees for provinces in the Mekong Delta, using local budgets. Experts trained under this programme will have to work for Mekong Delta provinces. This programme is being supported by the Ministry of Education and Training and many famous universities in the world.

The biggest problem for candidates of this program is English. They have to spend at least one year studying English, slowing down the process.

Several hundred students have been sent to over 20 countries under the Mekong 1000.
