A flock of redheaded cranes has winged its way back to make their home in Tram Chim National Park in Tam Nong District, in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap , with the latest estimate on Feb. 9 placing their number at 26 birds.

According to Le Hoang Long, an official with the national park’s scientific and environmental research division, each crane is estimated to exceed 10kg in weight and stands around 1m in height.

It is predicted that hundreds of cranes will return to the national park in May, following their migration period.

The red-headed crane is included in the IUCN Red Book, a comprehensive list of the world’s endangered or threatened animal species.

Tram Chim National Park offers an ideal environment for 231 species of birds, including 16 species of rare or protected birds, to make their home.
