LookAtVietnam – The Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta region is facing a heightened risk of forest fires due to recent hot weather, according to regional forest management officials, who have put the area’s forests under close, 24-hour observation.

The department has asked local forest watch teams to take preventive measures and be on standby to fight fires at any time.

Just on Feb. 26, 25ha of cajeput forest were destroyed by fire in Ham Ninh Commune, Kien Giang Province’s Phu Quoc District.

Le Van Hai, head of the Ca Mau forest management department, said that the danger posed by forest fires is very high as the current warm, dry weather is predicted to last for a while.

The department has asked local forest watch teams to take preventive measures and be on standby to fight fires at any time.

The management team of the U Minh Ha cajeput forest said about 130 dams have already been built to retain water and reduce the threat of fire. Pumps, water tanks, fire extinguishing equipment and watchtowers are in place throughout the Delta to protect the forests.

But Nguyen Duc Thang, deputy head of An Giang forest management department said that measures to control forest fires were still rudimentary, so the department is mainly concentrating on fire prevention work.

The department has ordered local authorities to cooperate with the forest watch teams, police and local residents to put groups on duty all day in high-risk areas. Residents have also been forbidden to light fires in the forest.
