Sea water is attacking major rivers in the Mekong Delta, worrying local farmers with the third-season rice crop coming.

Deputy Director of the Hydrometeorology Centre of Ca Mau province, Tran Tien Dung, said that the salinity measured at Song Doc town Ca Mau was 0.29% and it was 0.25% at Ganh Hao Bridge in Ca Mau city. Salinity in other areas in Ca Mau ranges between 0.15-0.21percent.

Salt water from Ca Mau is travelling up the Quan Lo – Phung Hiep canals to Bac Lieu province, resulting in a salt content of 0.21% in Phuoc Long town and 0.15-0.16% in Ninh Quoi.

The Deputy Director of the Bac Lieu Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Luong Ngoc Lan, said that it is possible that the productivity of over 2,000ha of rice in the border area with Soc Trang province would fall because of the high salinity.

In Soc Trang province, people in Long Phu district have to buy fresh water for daily use, at VND5,000-6,000/40l.
