LookAtVietnam – The 3RVolunteer Club on Sunday held the third Mottainai Fair at the Children’s Palace to share the concept of Mottainai and promote environmental awareness in Hanoi.

People at Mottainai Fair trade used items.

Hundreds of people attending the fair brought used items such as clothes, books, tools or equipment to exchange with each other to raise the spirit of economy and show their respect for the environment. The 3R Club introduced the re-usable canvas eco-bag to reduce use of plastic bags and decorated the event with banners made of recycled materials.

The fair is part of a project called “Give me an eco-bag” which won top prize at the Mam nhan ai (Seeds of Compassion) contest organized by FPT Corporation and the website www.vicongdong.vn. In the first phase, the project will be carried out in four places in Ba Dinh District to encourage use of the eco-bag and generate jobs for local disabled people. An eco-bag design contest will be held for residents of Phan Chu Trinh and Nguyen Du districts.

Mottainai is a Japanese term meaning a sense of regret concerning waste when the intrinsic value of an object or resource is not properly utilized and is widely considered one of the core symbols of Japanese thinking. The term implies the so-called 5Rs, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair and Reverence for Nature.
