White goby.

In the 1970s, crown prince Akihito wrote a doctoral dissertation about fish in the southern region of Vietnam. He collected nine specimens of a white goby species in Tan Chau district, Ben Tre province.

The Japanese crown prince discovered that this was a new species of fish in the world. He named it Glosssogobius sparsipapillus Akihito and Meguro.

On March 1, 1974, the Hanoi General University’s fauna museum (currently the Hanoi University for Natural Sciences) received a white goby, which was Paratype specimen of the Japanese crown prince, who is the Japanese Emperor Akihito. This was a gift from the Japanese crown prince to the university.

The specimen is coded No: 137 Glosssogobius sparsipapillus sp. Nov.

In his meeting with Japanese Emperor Akihito in April 1995, former Party Secretary Do Muoi thanked the Emperor and the Queen for their contributions to the friendship between the two countries, including the Emperor’s gift to the Hanoi General University.

The specimen is now preserved carefully at the university’s museum.

On March 6, the Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam presented the Hanoi University of Natural Sciences the essay about Vietnamese goby by the Japanese Emperor.
