Many passengers on two ships on the way from the islands of An Son and Hon Tre to Rach Gia city in the southern province of Kien Giang for the first time in their lives witnessed a waterspout at sea at 2.30pm, March 8.

That was a huge water pillar of at least 700m which moved very fast on the sea, about 10km from the shore of Rach Gia city. The waterspout existed for 15-20 minutes and then disappeared.

It is lucky that the areas where the waterspout passed didn’t have any vehicle or aquatic breeding cages, so there were no consequences.

According to local fishermen, waterspouts often appear on the sea offshore Hon Tre Island in the rainy and stormy season. It is strange to have a waterspout near the shore at this time of the year, they said.
