LookAtVietnam – Big C Vietnam, a major retailer in the country, said on Tuesday it would only choose those suppliers who do not violate the environment law of Vietnam.

“Environmental protection is always our top criterion to choose products suppliers for both our domestic supermarkets and exports”.

Nguyen Le Nguyen Vu, manager of the Food Department of Big C Vietnam, the operator of several supermarkets, said Big C Vietnam always assigns its staff to take periodical surveys at manufacturers that supply goods for Big C and encouraged them to obey strictly all regulations on environmental protection.

“One of our criteria in choosing suppliers for domestic supermarkets as well as for export is that the supplier must not violate the environment law,” he told a seminar with suppliers on the potential of boosting Vietnam’s exports held here on Tuesday.

“Environmental protection is always our top criterion to choose products suppliers for both our domestic supermarkets and exports,” he told the meeting.

Seconding Vu’s opinion, Le Thi Thanh Tam, Textile Merchandiser of Big C Vietnam, said the retailer would take immediate action if suppliers were found to breach environment regulations.

“If we find any producers violating the environment law, we will stop buying their products immediately,” she said.

Tam flashbacked how Big C took all products of Vedan Company off its supermarkets’ shelves nationwide when this monosodium glutamate producer was discovered to have released untreated wastewater into the Thi Vai River.

Big C Vietnam is operating eight supermarkets, distributing over 50,000 products supplied by some 1,500 manufacturers from around the country.

Vu told the Daily on the sidelines of the seminar that Big C Vietnam attained total export revenue of some US$16 million in 2008, and the retailer expected to increase the export earnings to US$20 million this year.

The merchandise trader ships goods to 11 foreign markets via the distributing chains of Casino Group as its parent company in France. Foodstuff takes some 50% of Big C Vietnam’s export revenue, while wooden furniture contributes 30% is and the remainder is from garment and footwear, according to Big C Vietnam.

Apart from environmental protection, Tam said, Big C also encourages its suppliers in the country to commit to social responsibilities in their production.
