Around 1,000 waste recycling units are operational in HCM City and most are small- and medium-size firms, reported the HCM City Waste Recycling Fund.

According to the fund, these firms use old and outdated equipment and technology. A recent survey reveals that up to 94% of them don’t have waste-water treatment systems and 84% lack waste gas treatment facilities, causing serious environmental pollution.

HCM City discharges more than 6,000 tonnes of solid waste per day, including around 2,000 tonnes (waste-paper, plastic, nylon, glass, metal) which can be recycled.

Most waste recycling firms are located in districts 6, 8, 10, 11, Binh Tan and Tan Phu.

Some rubber, paper and plastic recycling enterprises which were moved from HCM City’s inner area to the suburbs continue to pollute the environment.
