Mekong Delta Province of Kien Giang’s measures to protect 200 hectares of nang grass, which provide a habitat for red-crowned cranes, in Kien Luong District are showing results, a report said.

The report from Development of Biosphere Reserve of Kien Giang Province said the number of red-crowned cranes has increased year after year, rising from 102 in 2007 to 200 now.

Bang grass fields area became a nice place to reside of this kind of bird thank to local authorities applied measures to prevent forest fire and keep land moisture.

The birds feed on the roots of the nang grass, which grows in a hustle with bang grass in tropical wetlands.

The red-crowned crane is on the World Wildlife Fund’s endangered list of animals. In Vietnam, their numbers are small and they can be found mostly in the Mekong Delta.

Bang grass products are made using traditional techniques and have found their way markets like Japan, Mexico, and the EU, creating more jobs for farm workers and helping them earn more money.
