Simple biogas systems can save farming households an average of VND24 million (US$1,400) per year in electricity expenses, scientists announced in a review of a successful biogas pilot program on July 25.

Professor Bui Van Ga, director of Da Nang University, said the equivalent of $1,400 could be saved annually by converting the waste of 15-20 pigs into biogas.

Ga and his colleagues made the conclusion after successfully operating 25 biogas systems in northern and central provinces for a year.

The systems use biogas collected from pig feces instead of diesel fuel to generate electricity on a small scale.

Project organizers said biogas can help prevent environmental pollution and conserve fossil fuels.

The standard bio-fuel systems gather pig feces in large containers and collect the biogas emitted from the waste over time.
