LookAtVietnam – The Government said the country’s flash flood hazard maps, that are in the process of being drawn up will be completed this year to help prevent and deal with inundation.

To prevent floods and reduce the damage they cause, provinces should improve people’s awareness of flood prevention.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Van Duc said the Institute of Hydro-meteorology and Environment had been given the task of making province-wide maps after studying their relief features and location and measuring rainfall.

“It is very important to have flash flood hazard maps because they will enable localities to actively prevent and deal with floods and move residents out of the most hazardous zones,” he said.

The ministry has told the institute to hand the maps over to provinces as soon as they are ready, train provincial personnel in using them, and update them every three years.

To prevent floods and reduce the damage they cause, provinces should improve people’s awareness of flood prevention, he said.

The Central Storm and Flood Prevention and Control Steering Committee reports that as the number of storms and floods has increased in the last decade, up to 700 people have been killed every year.
