To prevent impacts from the construction of 11 hydro-power dams on the Mekong River, An Giang has launched a campaign calling for the people to save this river.

The province called for the local residents to send their ideas on how to save the river to the An Giang People’s Committee by post or emails.

An Giang’s people can directly support the campaign by sending postcards with the message of protecting the Mekong River to the governments of related countries through the local Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

The can also visit the province’s website to sign their name in the petition to save the Mekong River.

An Giang’s authorities said that this campaign aims to call for the countries located on the Mekong River basin to reconsider their hydro-power dam plans so that the downstream area will not suffer from drought in the dry season and flood in the rainy season.

Last year environmental activists established the Mekong River Saving Coalition to protect the river, which originates from China through Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.
