LookAtVietnam – The UK’s envoy on climate security said Vietnam needs to get involved in the global plan on climate change because it is likely to seriously suffer from global warming.

Gwynn paid a visit to Vietnam from September 7-9 before the 15th conference of the members of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change in Copenhagen this December.

According to the UK Embassy in Vietnam, Gwynn met with Vietnamese government agencies to encourage Vietnam to contribute to the global plan on climate change together with other highly-vulnerable countries.

He said: “I believe that Vietnam and other vulnerable countries need to strongly raise their voices in these negotiations. For the losses caused by climate change that Vietnam may have to bear and for its national interests, Vietnam needs to influence big economies to urgently aim at a global fair and comprehensive convention for the period after 2012.”

Vietnam is among the countries that are expected to most suffer from climate change because it has over 3000km of coast and low deltas. These deltas are the countries’ economic and residential centres but their infrastructure is underdeveloped. Vietnam also relies on agriculture, forestry and natural resources.

Consequences of climate changes – stronger storms and the rise of sea level – many take land and thus the livelihoods of millions of people.
